Black Panther #27 Summary/Review Lunapic_134578210424586_2-1

The issue starts with the new Fantastic Four (which has BP and Storm taking the place of Reed and Sue) coming back from their trip to space. Everyone is tired, except for Storm, who specifically requests “nap” time with her man (who happily agrees). However, everyone’s R&R is interrupted when Ben hears a loud crash noise, which wasn’t caused by Johnny, or royal couple’s “nap”. Storm immediately checks on Franklin and Valeria Richards. She gets to their door, when she is attacked (mistakenly) by Herbie, who is then downed by a lightning bolt. The children explain that Herbie didn’t mean it, and that he was actually protecting them from a “bug”. Meanwhile, Black Panther, Thing, and Johnny have realized that a creature has escaped from the negative zone, and has overcome every defense it encountered within the Baxter Building. The Dora Milaje manage to stop the creature from eating a woman, and almost get eaten themselves, until Thing shows up and delivers some heavy blows to the creature’s body. But the “bug” shrugs off the hits, and throws thing across the room. Johnny intervenes and throws a fireball…which is then eaten…and spit back at him, knocking him from the sky. Storm catches Johnny with a gust of wind, and then blasts the bug with lightning. Maria Hill reaches out to T’Challa and offers assistance via hologram, but T’Challa turns her down, and proceeds to go help his team. Meanwhile, in Wakanda, Shuri is being pressured by G’Mal and her cousin to take charge and investigate the presence of American Warships on Wakandan waters. She doesn’t agree to the former, but G’Mal’s persistence does make her agree to the latter. At the Baxter Building, the creature is unstoppable, and eating furniture. Black Panther tries to stop him with a foam that hardens to steel on impact, but he breaks free…and eats the foam. Before the bug has the chance to break out of the Baxter Building, and eat a giant water tank that randomly caught it’s eye, T’Challa brings out King Solomon’s frogs. The frogs prove successful, and sends the creature through the time/space continuum...along with the rest of the team. Storm senses the dimensional shifts, and says they’re arriving. Immediately afterwards, they appear high above an alien society, and begin their fall toward the ground. Storm catches Black Panther, Johnny flies, and The Thing crashes into the ground. With everyone ok, T’Challa instructs Ben to engage the Bug, while the others get any civilians to safety. However, it turns out the civilians are in fact Skrulls. And as soon as T’Challa asks if things can get any worse, they do, as Zombie Luke Cage, Giant Man, Spider-Man, Wolverine, Iron Man, and Hulk suddenly appear before them.

My thoughts

I actually liked this issue. It’s not a story that you read for the sake of finding real character development. It’s a story that you read for a nice blend of action and humor. All of the characters balance each other out quite nicely, and the Thing and Johnny each help the dialogue to flow with comedy, while the Black Panther and Storm’s seriousness helps the issue to not be overtaken by campiness. It’s also really nice to see Storm and Black Panther actually act like newlyweds. Speaking of Storm, she doesn’t exactly “shine” in this issue. But even with all of her power, she still actually feels like a genuine part of the team, and shares the spotlight equally with her fellow FF. I also liked the art for the most part. There were some facial expressions that simply did not feel right, but I feel it really fits the story that’s being told…..and Storm has moments where she looks ridiculously gorgeous. This adventure is worth reading.

7/10

Excellent review, WM. I haven't read the issue in awhile but this definitely brought back pleasant memories of it.
